Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are very common. They can be very painful, unattractive, and upsetting - especially to those of us who love sandals.

Usually, cracked skin on our heels and feet is caused by excessively dry skin, resulting in thickening and ultimately fissuring of the skin. Going barefoot and wearing shoes with open backs can exacerbate the problem.  Some people have a naturally dry skin that predisposes them to cracks. The thickened dry skin (callus) around the heel is more likely to crack due to mechanical factors that increase pressures in that area, such as the way you walk.

Unfortunately, as the condition worsens, it becomes more difficult to treat at home, since regular moisturisers won't penetrate the dry, dead, thick skin on our heels.

Causes of cracked heels

  • Wearing shoes or sandals with an open back or simply wearing improperly fitting shoes. Open backed shoes allow fat in the skin under the heel to expand sideways and increase the pressure to 'crack'
  • Prolonged standing, especially on hard floors
  • Being overweight which increases the pressure on the heels causing them to expand sideways and eventually crack
  • Medical conditions that lead to dry skin such as diabetes, under active thyroid, misalignment of the metatarsal bones, heel spurs, and a history that includes surgery to the lower extremities.
  • Skin conditions such as inactive sweat glands, Athlete's foot, psoriasis and eczema
  • Foot shape: Flat feet, High arched feet

Symptoms of cracked heels

  • Hard growth of skin on the outer edge of the heel
  • Yellow or dark skin on the heel
  • Pain while walking
  • Increased pain in thin soles or open backed shoes
  • Red or flaky patches on the heel of the foot
  • Peeling and cracked skin
  • Itchy skin

Treatment: Callus Peel Pedicure

If your heals are severely cracked, then you'll have to see your Podiatrist.  However, if the cracks on your feet are minor enough to be a nuisance and not a medical issue, there is a very simple and painless solution to cracked heels.  Our callus peel is a blade-free treatment that removes the thickened skin on the heels and soles of the feet, creating a more supple skin and removing or reducing the tendency and occurrence of cracks. Callus peel breaks down and removes the dead skin without irritation or pain. Have callus peel as a stand alone treatment or combine with a pedicure for some pampering.
